Can you hear me now?!?

Just wanted to sound off on a local epidemic here in the Bronx - speakerphones.  Now, I understand there are times when you need the speakerphone, but 98 times out of 100, you don't.

The epidemic I am speaking about involved people walking on the sidewalks, holding their phones to their mouth, and letting everyone around them know about their conversation.

Here's my problem with it.  I don't give a rat's ass about how cool you think you are, how important you think your conversation is, or how much of a gangster you think this technique makes you look like - you're NOT cool.  You're still holding the phone up to your head to speak.  Does it cause you that much of an inconvenience to hold it 4" higher to your ear so that the rest of the walking population cannot hear your conversation?

Maybe if you were at work or home and doing something else with your hands, then the speakerphone feature is worth using.  But walking down the street does not, in any circumstance, call for you to use speakerphone.  Because guess what, no one else gives a shit about what you or your cronies have to say!

Put the phone up to your ear.  I have yet to see someone not stop and either roll their eyes or shake their head when they pass someone guilty of using improper speakerphone.  Number one, it doesn't make you cool.  Number two, it makes you look like a vain, self-involved douche.

Get a blue tooth.  Or better yet, just use the damn phone the way it's supposed to be used - on your ear!

No TV

Day 10 of no program television is now upon us.  Things are going well, besides not being able to check out some high quality prime-time shows (all of Lindsay's shows, plus MLB baseball, SportsCenter, American Pickers, Pawn Stars to name a few).

Netflix has come in handy as of late, movies come and go on about a three day schedule.  We watched Step Brothers the other night, hilarious freaking movie.  Lindsay's first viewing, my second.  Still entertaining.  Will Ferrell has to be one of the funniest actors alive.  Hands down.  Then we sent away for Up In The Air.  George Clooney is awesome in that one, and I'm not generally a huge fan.  But the premise was great, it was funny, and it had won awards out the ass.  I say those awards were well deserved.  Two nights ago, Jesse came over for dinner with me, Linds, and Nathan because Julia was in St. Maarten with her sister.  We ate, and watched JUNO.  Same director (Jason Reitman) as Up In The Air, and just as funny if not funnier.  The language is hilarious, the words they use.  If you haven't seen JUNO, go see it.  It also won plenty of awards from the press and media.  Well deserved.  Just because DirecTV sucks the big one doesn't mean they can damper my television viewing experience.  I still got DVD's sucker!!

On the baseball, the Yankees are once again tied with the Rays for first place in the AL East.  Both teams share the best record in baseball (78-48) but the Red Sox are still hovering, only six games back.

Lindsay kicked my ass at Scrabble last night, 296-216.  What an absolute drubbing it was.  I was out of it from my third turn.  I had seven consecutive turns where I had at least 5 vowels on my rack.  Needless to say, 1-point letters when your down 50 points are useless.

It's getting muggy in the office, per usual.  I share my office with the entire student-athlete population, so the traffic is high and some of the odors are pretty horrific.  Gonna take a stroll and take care of some things on campus.  Meeting with broker today - hope things work out for this new place.

  Fingers crossed.

Strasburg back on the shelf; Ohio St. pays top dollar

Golden Boy Stephen Strasburg is once again on the DL.  Another MRI is being done for his strained tendon in the forearm.  Poor kid.  Hey, you know what, at least he has his money.  His health is in question but damn, that money ain't going anywhere.

In NCAA Football news, according to the AP, Ohio State will pay the Colorado Buffaloes $1.4 million to play the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium in 2011.  Absolutely unheard of.  Since when does a major school pay another major school (albeit mediocre) $1.4 million to play a regular season game?  It's a joke.  Compared to the $300,000 to $700,000 Ohio State normally pays for an out-of-conference home game, I guess they think finally playing a legit (read: mediocre) school and winning will be better for them than playing the likes of Akron or Toledo.

  In 2009, Ohio State OOC included Navy (W 31-27), #3 USC (L 18-15), @Toledo (W 38-0), and New Mexico State (W 45-0).  Total score:  Ohio State 129, Opponent 45.  Record:  3-1.  Three cupcakes and a powerhouse.  In 2008, Ohio State entertained Youngstown St. (W 43-0), Ohio (W 26-14), @#1 USC (L 35-3) and Troy (W 28-10).  Total score:  Ohio State 100, Opponents 59.  Record 3-1.  Three cupcakes and a powerhouse.

Here's an idea, schedule some better teams (a la Colorado in 2011, #13 Miami in 2010).  They play Eastern Michigan this year, who didn't win a game in 2009.  I guess they'll get at least one win.

Weather sucks.  Gotta drop off my DirecTV shit.  Maybe whip up some dinner.  Get a picture of Nathan printed out so I can get this process moved along getting into our new place.  Damn will I be exponentially happier in a nice apartment instead of the dregs we live now.

  Adios!!

60'6"

Getting things back to baseball for the coming school year.  Crazy how quick the summer goes and how school starts on Monday.

I'm back from my 4 month hiatus from reading "60'6"" with Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson.  Good insight.  Good read.

Time for lunch, I feel as though I may pass out, and might be able to throw back 4 to 5 BLT's.  Easy!

  Later.

Live and Learn

Because the installation people from DirecTV told me it was OK to put the dish on my neighbors shed even though I told them I thought it wasn't OK, I am responsible for the early cancellation fee of $340.

I called the woman a mule, a moron, and told her she probably wasn't even important enough to have an window in her office.  Told her she's a yes-woman with no soul.  She said she understood my situation, not "The Situation", my situation, and told her she's probably lives in Podunk USA and deals with farm animals all day.

It's over, DirecTV blows.  NEVER USE DIRECTV!  EVER!

  FUCK YOU DIRECTV!!

Jerry Manuel for "Jackass of the Year"

Here's a quote from Jerry Manuel as reported by the AP:

“Obviously I’m disappointed, discouraged, frustrated,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “When you get this kind of news it’s … we’ve just been through a lot. We seem to continue to have difficulties keeping things from—having these type of injuries or these type of setbacks. Every year it seems like we get a little something here or there.”

Jerry, take a look in the mirror and around the clubhouse you helped build.  You've been through a lot because you brought in a bunch of high-priced crap.  Or maybe it's the fact that you can't even finish a sentence.  And every  year you do get a little something here or there, and it's never anything good.

I am not a Mets fan, but I do feel for those who are.  When the skipper of your team is as incapable as this guy, you can't help but feel bad for fans.  Spending their hard earned money night after night at CitiField to watch a glorified AAA team?  No thanks.

Wilpon, fire this guy.  He's a lame duck and will continue to be so.

  Go Yankees!!

The Bronx is Burned

The Bronx was once "Burning", but now it's officially burned.

The Yankees just finished a 4-game split with the Royals, cutting their lead over 2nd-place Tampa to 1 game.  The race remaining tight so whenever Pettitte is ready to come back won't be a day too soon.  As much as I like seeing Dustin Moseley have moments of brilliance, I still am about as comfortable with him as I am Sergio Mitre.  They need to win series' from here on out and take care of "the easy part of their schedule" as they keep saying on ESPN Radio.  Detroit (57-60) for 4 and Seattle(46-72) for 3 at the Stadium.  Then they go to Toronto (62-55) and Chicago (65-63) for 3-gamers.  Toronto   Following that, a 10-game homestand versus Oakland(57-59), Toronto, and Baltimore(41-77).  Buck has those boys in Baltimore playing well now though, so that may not be a walk in the park.  They do need to take care of business at home though against the weaker teams in the AL.  The AL (b)East and the NL West are the only two dvisions with four teams over .500.  That's a pretty astounding number.  The AL Central has two (MIN, CWS), AL West has two (TEX, LAA), NL East has two (ATL, PHI) and the NL Central has two (CIN, STL).  Winning either one of those two division ain't gonna be easy for the Yankees and Padres.  The Pads have a 3.5 game lead over the Giants and are showing no signs of slowing down.  Just hope their arms stay healthy.

I returned Sunday night from a 3-day hiatus from this borough only to find my television not working - turns out the neighbor took it upon himself to take my DirecTV dish down.  I am going to cancel their ass, the service they've given sucks and God forbid it rains heavy or snows - service is spotty.  I guess I have no one to blame but myself so I can't be too angry.  I told them when they installed it that where they were going to place the dish was on my neighbor's yard.  This shmuck was sold on the fact that because the wall to the garage was facing my yard, it was OK.  Now take into consideration I'm renting, so whatever's whatever.  Neighbor comes around the block, tells me to move it, I relay the message to DirecTV, no luck.  They keep telling me it's fine.  Next time I need service, they come out, adjust the dish, I tell them it needs to move, they say it's fine.  Now it's sitting next to my house near the garbage pails.  Nice job DirecTV.

We're looking for a new apartment, and had two in mind and were anxious to start somewhere new.  Broker called me today and both are rented - within the last 48 hours.  Keeping on with my hunt.

There was a independent photo shoot on the side of the house, affectionately known as the "jungle" because of my landlords refusal to give a shit about what the yard looks like.  Sorry, it's not a yard, it's an empty lot.  Some dude was  on a motorcycle riding around in the side lot - it's a shame he wasn't able to use a lawnmower instead to cut some of those damn weeds.

School starts in a few days, some of the athletes are back (volleyball, soccer) and the rest of the plebes come back soon.  Looking forward to another year - of baseball.  Summer is such a tranquil time of year here on campus except when the GYLC's are here.  Kids from all over the world come in and take over the dorms, forge new friendships, partake in summer love, and speak in foreign languages so that no one here can understand them.  Their invasion lasts about a week each, with 6 sets of GYLC's coming in throughout the summer.  It's over, they're out, thank God.

Nathan had some shots the other day, one of which turned him from a dachshund into a shar pei.  His face turned into a giant swollen mess.  We raced back to the vet to get some benedryl for the swelling.  He's back to normal now, just have to keep medicating him twice daily for another 4 days.  It kind of knocks him out, so he's out of it.

I am literally sweating my cojones off.  I have a little to nothing left to do today except see the apartment this afternoon.

  Adios kimosabe.

Busy Busy Busy

There's been a ton going on so far this summer, so the blog had to be put on the back-burner.  I will be back in full force once the school year begins again.

Thanks for the patience and I'll be back!!

The Great Fluke

Today we entered the Captain Gregory pool and the Captree pool.  $5 for those who wished to enter the Captain Gregory boat pool for  biggest fish.  LMD took that bitch home - only keeper out of 170 fish reeled in.  A mammoth 23.5", 4.66 lb. fluke from the depths of the ocean.  The Captree pool is one we have to call on in a day or two.  It was $1 for those who wanted to enter and the biggest fluke of the day - 10 or so boats at 2 outings per day - won the grand prize.  They'll find a way to screw us out of it, but I'll be calling them tomorrow to see if there was a greater fluke than hers.

Got home, made a pretty damn good dinner tapas menu, and am continuing to take down the BLL.  And doing laundry.

Good night, safe travels, and keep those rods bending.  Hope to be about $500 richer tomorrow because of LMD's mammo fluke-inator.

Hook, Line, and Sinker

Heading out to sea tomorrow, I think.  Maybe just the LI Sound.  I really have no idea what to even expect.  We're going on a charter boat to catch fish.  Not sure what kinds of fish are out there - fluke, blowfish, swordfish - but I sure hope I catch at least one.

Here's to not puking over the edge and not getting totally frustrated with catching no fish.  Otherwise a nice day is planned, maybe a few drinks, and hopefully some fish filets for dinner.

Dropping lines at 9 am.  Bud Lime Time!!
